Support Poku Transport Hospital to Enhance Medical Care for Children and Families in the Ashanti Region of Ghana
About the Campaign
Three generations of the Poku family have been dedicated medical care providers for children and families in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. The Poku family routinely treats patients for malaria, diabetes and diarrheal diseases. Burns are common for their pediatric patients due to most households having open stoves low to the ground. Their maternity department is constantly busy.
Initially founded as a children’s hospital, Poku Transport Hospital is a private, level 2 primary hospital run by a father-son physician team. Dr. Charles Poku, Sr. opened Poku Transport Hospital in 1998 with his father. Today, Poku Transport Hospital is run by Dr. Charles Poku, Sr., a pediatrician, as well as his son, Dr. Charles Poku, Jr., an OB/GYN.
Over the decades, the hospital has provided professional, consistent care for Asokwa neighborhood of Kumasi, serving an urban population of 126,000. The facility also attracts patients from outside this area, including other regions in Ghana and neighboring countries. Poku Transport Hospital accepts both public and private insurance and engages in NGO partnerships to provide free medical screenings and free surgeries. These innovative partnerships improve access to quality medical and surgical care for the Kumasi area’s most vulnerable patients.
The innovation and dedication of Poku Transport Hospital’s leadership team does not protect them from shortages and critical needs. With over 25 years of operation, the facility's equipment is severely outdated, with most purchases dating back to the hospital’s inception. Much of the equipment is no longer functional. The faulty anesthesia machine and broken ultrasound machine are particularly detrimental, limiting surgical capabilities and severely impacting obstetric care. The maternity, adult, and pediatric wards are all in need of updates, with a pressing need for patient monitors, furniture, and beds.
A partnership with Project C.U.R.E. will be a life-saving solution. Delivery of a C.U.R.E. container will provide crucial updates, enabling the facility to expand its services and elevate patient care.
Donate now to make a difference. This C.U.R.E. Cargo delivery will be in excellent hands and have a lasting impact.
