They've Carried Us; It's Our Time to Carry Them
This Mother's Day: Helping Mother's Survive
How Project C.U.R.E. is Saving Lives of Mothers Around the World 🌎
Every day, approximately 830 women die from preventable causes related to pregnancy and childbirth.
A staggering 99% of these maternal deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries, where health workers often care for both the mother and newborn without adequate resources or support.
Project C.U.R.E. is committed to changing that. Through our Helping Mothers Survive (HMS) training programs, we are equipping midwives, nurses, and birth attendants with the skills to save lives—so that more babies are born into a world where their mothers survive.
“I have learned that you must wear two pairs of gloves when assisting with a birth. Then you must remove one before clamping the cord so that you can prevent cord infections. “ – Augustina Alaale, Midwife in Ghana and HMS Graduate June 2025

How HMS Training Works
Helping Mothers Survive is a suite of simulation-based training modules developed by Jhpiego to address the most common causes of maternal mortality. These modules teach midwives, nurses, and birth attendants how to prevent, detect, and manage life-threatening complications during childbirth.
Each training uses realistic simulators and hands-on practice to build clinical confidence and ensure long-term skill retention. Participants complete objective structured clinical examinations to demonstrate clinical competency.
HMS follows a train-the-trainer model. Project C.U.R.E.’s International facilitators travel to partner communities to train local healthcare providers, who can then become certified local Master Trainers. These local master trainers lead ongoing, locally-run trainings in their communities, ensuring that the knowledge continues to spread long after Project C.U.R.E. leaves.
This model ensures the skills are sustainable, scalable, and deeply rooted in local capacity.
