A New Hospital for Mothers and Babies

Hospital Materno Infantil Amazonas opened its first floor in Luanda, Angola, three months ago. Its mission is simple: safe, tailored medical care for women and children. In its first three months, the hospital cared for 75 patients. Its two inpatient beds stayed 80 percent full on average.

Why It Matters in Angola

Angola has just 0.24 physicians for every 1,000 people, or about one doctor for every 4,000. Hospital beds are just as scarce, at 0.75 per 1,000 people. For many families, especially in rural areas, that means care is hard to reach when they need it most.

The team behind Hospital Materno Infantil Amazonas is working to change that. Alongside the hospital, they have opened four clinics and bought two ambulances to serve rural communities.

What the Hospital Needs Most

During a recent needs assessment, Project C.U.R.E. identified three urgent priorities:

-Four infant incubators to keep premature babies warm and safe
-One X-ray machine to diagnose patients without a referral across the city
-Two operating lights to prepare for the hospital's new operating room

The hospital also needs birthing beds, fetal monitors, patient monitors, oxygen concentrators and everyday supplies like gloves, sutures, and Kits for Kids.

Built to Grow

This container is the first step in a broader plan to improve health care for the communities they serve. Two more floors are planned, with an operating room, two intensive care units and new inpatient wards. Equipment you help send today will serve mothers and babies for years to come.

Ready on Day One

The hospital has stable power, a backup generator, and air conditioning in every room. Three biomedical technicians on staff can install, maintain, and repair every machine.
